Multiracial people who change their racial identity from a single race to multiracial over time may be healthier than their minority peers who consistently identify as monoracial, new research suggests.

Despite the U.S.’s rapidly growing population of multiracial individuals, researchers and health care systems continue to use outdated approaches to racial categorization that force people to classify themselves as monoracial, which may be masking the incidence of health conditions and obscuring disparities in health care access and utilization among multiracial populations, a University of Illinois scholar said.

Social work professor Karen M. Tabb Dina is the lead author of two recent studies that explored issues of racial identity and its impact on health care access and utilization among nearly 8,000 U.S. young people.

The subjects in both of Tabb Dina’s studies were participants in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, one of the first surveys to allow respondents to identify themselves as multiracial using two or more racial categories, Tabb Dina said.

Participants in the Adolescent Health survey were asked about their racial background during the first wave of data collection in 1994 and again during the third wave, conducted in 2002.

The research is by Annemarie Schalkwijk, VU University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues.

Being overweight or obese is associated with environmental, parental and socioeconomic status (SES) characteristics. The aims of this study were to assess the association of environmental characteristics during ages 3-5 on being overweight or obese at age 7. That wild fish you’re shelling out for might be a bit more tame than the label indicates, says the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Truth is, some fish sold might actually be a mix of wild caught and farmed-raised, researchers wrote in a paper published on Monday in the journal Marine Policy.

For example, an estimated 40 percent of the Alaskan salmon sold originates in fish hatcheries, even though it’s labeled “all wild, never farmed,” researchers say. Instead of sticking this fish with a “wild” label, the researchers call on seafood producers to label these foods as “hybrids” — a term they say will be essential for future fish production.

Fisheries traditionally interact with fish when they are captured, whereas farm-raised fish, or aquaculture, “controls the entire life-cycle of the organism, from egg to harvest,” says Stanford University’s Dane Klinger, who wrote the paper on the issue. Many types of seafood and shellfish use a combination of these techniques, of which most consumers are unaware, Klinger says. Because of an increasing demand for fish, this type of harvesting is essential to the fish industry, say Klinger and her co-authors.

The study in rodents found that when mice had a particular gene — SIRT1 — knocked out, or turned off, resveratrol had no effect on them. But tests of muscle tissue in mice with a normal SIRT1 gene that were given resveratrol found that the substance boosted mitochondrial function.

Mitochondria provide the energy that cells need to function. A decrease in mitochondrial energy production has been linked to a variety of diseases, including diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as to the aging process itself, said senior study author David Sinclair, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

But don’t go reaching for that Chianti yet. Yes, resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes. But “the amounts we gave to our mice would be like drinking 100 glasses of red wine a day,” Sinclair said.

Instead, the goal is to develop synthetic resveratrol compounds that activate SIRT1 and could be taken as medication. “My colleagues are in the middle of developing better molecules that we hope will be medicines that will be used to treat diseases of aging, not to extend lifespan, though that may be a side effect,” Sinclair said.

Researchers examined the salt content of more than 2,100 food items in seven product categories sold by Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Subway in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The food-product categories included savory breakfast items, burgers, chicken products, pizza, salads, sandwiches and french fries.

The study found that sodium levels in similar foods varied widely among the countries, and that fast food in the United States and Canada contained much higher levels of sodium than in the United Kingdom and France.

For example, McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets in Canada contained 2.5 times more sodium than those in the United Kingdom. There were 600 milligrams of sodium (1.5 grams of salt) in a 3.5-ounce serving in Canada, but the same serving size in the United Kingdom contained 240 milligrams of sodium (0.6 grams of salt).

The study appears April 16 in the Canadian Medical Association’s journal, CMAJ.

“Canadian companies indicate they have been working to reduce sodium but the high sodium in these foods indicates voluntary efforts aren’t working,” Norman Campbell, of the University of Calgary, and colleagues, said in a journal news release.
